Suriname and tropical South and Central America.
Tree description
Height 38-45 m with roots up to 3.5 m high. The straight cylindrical branch-free trunk is (5-) 12-15 (-20) m long and has a diameter of (0.4-) 0.7 (-1.0) m.
Wood description
The pale brown heartwood quickly discolors to a beautiful purple-blue when exposed to light. In order to preserve this color as well as possible, the wood should be well sealed from the air with wax or certain types of varnish. If the wood is not finished, the purple color will turn dirty brown. The sapwood is white to gray-brown and is 30-60 mm wide.
