Swamp Oak Wood. The wood sold under the name bog oak is used to make high-quality knife handles. Bog oak is not a separate oak species, but oak wood that has stood in a swamp for a long time. Oak trunks are found in swamps, on river banks and lake shores, where they have been submerged for centuries or even millennia.
The wood is usually colored gray/black with brown undertones due to tannins dissolved in the acidic water. In addition to a dramatically deeper color, bog oak also grows extremely dense. This is driven by the partial mineralization of the wood, making it rock hard. Although the physical properties of pin oak vary considerably from specimen to specimen, it is generally very tough on saws and chisels due to its excessive hardness.
