Thermoplastic glue -100gr- pellets.
SKU: 100 grSpecial hot melt glue granules for attaching Japanese style handles
Ideal for attaching handle material to the tang or securing a Nakago (tang) in a traditional Japanese handle. Epoxy glue or other hard glue is unsuitable for placing Japanese handles, this glue is too hard and can break causing the blade to come loose. It is essential that you always use a flexible (hot melt) glue.
This hot melt glue is made of so-called "friendly plastic" it is food safe and biodegradable and is also used in biomedical applications such as surgical sutures.
DESCRIPTION
- A fast-curing, universal hot melt glue that penetrates deep into the handle due to the granular shape
- Made of polymorph Polycaprolactone (biodegradable thermoplastic polyester)
- Curing time: 30 minutes
- Very good for ferrous metals and aluminum, copper, zinc and galvanized products and wood.
- Good for rubber types and glass/quartz/gemstones and ceramic materials.
- Good resistance to chemicals
- Permanently flexible
- Temperature resistance: -30°C to +60°C.
- 100 grams is enough for at least 5-10 handles
This glue can be used by first partially taping the handle to prevent glue traces and then filling it with the granules. Then you can heat the Nakago (tang or sting) of the blade with a gas burner until it is very hot (not red or white hot because then the glue burns, the glue only has to melt). The melting point of these granules is approximately 60 degrees Celsius.
Then the blade can be pushed into the handle and you will see that the granules melt. If the blade is straight in the handle, the remainder of the glue can be wiped away with a cloth (if the glue is still hard, this is easiest).
If you are not satisfied, the knife can be placed in an oven at 80-90 degrees for half an hour, the handle can then easily be removed or straightened.
Please note that this glue is quite sensitive to heat, so do not place the knife in full sun or next to a hot pan or on a hot surface. The glue will then soften again.
